Patrick Kinsella

Patrick was born at the family property at Rathellen, a rural area near the towns of Leighlinbridge and Bagenalstown in County Carlow. He married Jane Hanly in May 1962.

Jane was from Tipperary and was born in 1846. Jane's parents names were John and Sarah, and they were storekeepers.

On December 13 1862 they set sail from Queenstown, Cork, aboard the "Golden City", bound for Moreton Bay. The "Golden City" arrived in Australia on March 4 1863. They then took the steamship Yarra Yarra from Brisbane to Sydney on 5 April 1863. A picture of the passenger list is below.

Patrick and Jane settled in Darlinghurst, Sydney where he was a police sargeant and later moved to Glen Innes where he became court officer. After bearing 12 children, the youngest in 1885, his wife died at Glen Innes on 30 December 1887, at the age of 41.

Patrick married Mary Jane Shannon in Glen Innes on 3 November 1890. Mary Shannon was born on 6 August 1865 at St. Heliers near Muswellbrook. She was a school teacher in Glen Innes at the time of her marriage. She bore the six children referred to above, the first four of whom were born at Glen Innes and the last two, Nano and Clare at Wagga Wagga. Patrick was transferred there in 1890 as Sheriff's Officer of the Court.

After retirement he and his family moved to Sydney where he died at 39 Albany St, Crow's Nest. He is buried at Rookwood.

I currently have a research request into the Carlow Research Project in Co. Carlow. I'm hoping to obtain baptism, marriage and death records for our ancestors there.

From the Aldine History of NSW...

Patrick KINSELLA, Sheriffs Officer was born in Carlow Ireland and arrived in Australia in 1863. Shortly after landing he was appointed to the Police Force in which he remained until 1868 when he resigned. Immediately upon leaving the Police he was appointed Sheriffs Officer and shortly after was sent to Armadale where he served for 7 years. In 1867 he was transferred to Glen Innes where he has since continued the duties of that office. In the discharge of these functions Mr Kinsella has of necessity travelled considerably over and is well acquainted with the district. In 1862 he married and has issue of 12 children. On the 4 Nov 1887 he had the misfortune to lose his wife, a lady who will long be remembered in Glen Innes for her many acts of charity and benevolence to the deserving.
