Two NSW BDM records for possible children: In the Greville's Post Office Directory 1872 – TANGMANGAROO (Route – Rail Goulburn, Cobb’s coach Yass, 12m. Tangmangaroo) there are four Stonhams listed: Alfred, James, Samuel and Thomas. All are listed as Farmers living in Thorsby's Ck. I'm not sure of the order of the children, but I know from my mother's notes that Alfred Stonham had five siblings. James is listed in the Greville's Post Office Directory 1872 along with his brother and father. Eliza apparently married a Church of England Minister and Caroline's vessel to Australia apparently sank off the western Australian coast, and "she arrived in Australia in an iron box up to her neck in water". Samuel's name appears as a witness on a death certicficate of Philidelphia JAMES as written in the notes below (see http://www3.sympatico.ca/karen.black/james02.html). Deborah Kelly wrote me in July 2001 that Philadelphia and John Groves came to Australia on the ship "Cornwall" arriving 1st Sept 1839. At this point in time it is recorded John was 36 Philadelphia was 43, George was 11 and Harriet 8yrs of age. Debbie recorded this immigration information from the "Cornwall:" "Philadelphia Groves, married Female immigrant arrived by ship Cornwall. Brought out by ????? A native of Sandess Kent- daughter of Samuel James sheepshearer ????????? and Hannah Baily his wife ??????? Calling Houseservent Age 43yrs in July State of Bodily health, strength and probable usefulness ? says very good Religion Protestant Remarks ?says reads and writes." Debbie also extrapolated this information from Philadelphia's death certificate: "Philadelphia Groves wife of John Groves died 19th Nav 1959 at Yass River aged 64. Cause of death- verdict of jury accidental death caused by injuries recieved by a cart turning over upon her. Her Parents were Samuel James and Hannah James (maiden name unknown). She was buried on 21 Nov 1859 in the church of England burial ground Yass by undertaker Samuel Kershaw. The Clergyman was Reverend Thomas K (can't read his surname). Witnesses were Samuel Stonham and william Burgess. Born in Sandhurst Kent and had been in Australia 20 years. Married in Sandhurst, Kent age 20 to John Groves and had 2 children." It is probable that the Groves and Stonhams new each other in Kent, and came to Australia around the same time. I will be checking passenger lists for the "Cornwall". The date, 1839, would fit with Alfred being born in Kent in 1836. Brenda Stonham wrote me in October 2007 with the following: | |
