Business Tools: Geocoding

Have you ever needed the latitude and longitude of an address? Multiple addresses? Have you ever wanted to be able to export those addresses to your car GPS?

In response to the requirements of some sales people I work with who wanted an easy way to import customer waypoints into their GPS systems, here is a simple tool that allows you to:

  • Enter addresses and automatically generate the latitude and longitude of each
  • Specify the type of address (prospect, customer, restaurant, etc...)
  • View the addresses on a Google map and filter the view by address type
  • Export all addresses, or a single set of addresses (by type) to a GPS compatible file (.gpx)

To get start you'll need to create a simple account by entering your email address (no spam, guaranteed) and a password. Why do you need an account? So that you only see your own addresses.

The process of generating the latitude and longitude is called geocoding and this tool uses the Google geocoding functionality. Please note that Google limits the number of addresses that may be geocoded in a single day (without paying them money) so if for some reason the tool is not generating the coordinates of new addresses for you, that may be the reason. Maps of addresses you've already entered into the tool will always be available.
